Based on two Hilary Mantel’s novels (“Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up the Bodies”), “Wolf Hall” is a British historical drama which was first released in January 2015 on BBC Two. This miniseries has its focus on Thomas Cromwell, one of the most controversial Tudor figures. It follows his life from the moment he found himself caught up in the numerous intrigues while in the court of Henry VIII and then it continues to depict his life after his rapid rise to power.

Even though some historians criticized the series for its historical inconsistency, “Wolf Hall” was highly praised by numerous critics, and it was well-received by the viewers, as well. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 100% rating based on 29 reviews, while on Metacritic it holds a score of 86 out of 100. The Telegraph gave it 5 out of 5 stars, adding that “it is hard to imagine the BBC’s adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s novels being any better.” The drama was also praised by The Guardian, which described it as “sumptuous, intelligent, event television.” Finally, the critical consensus agreed that “beautifully filmed and brilliantly acted, Wolf Hall masterfully brings Hilary Mantel’s award-winning novels to life.”

For those of you who may not be familiar with the series, “Wolf Hall” is set in the 16th century, when Henry VIII, the king of England, had to confront the Pope who refused to approve the king’s decision to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. As for Thomas Cromwell, in the drama, he is depicted as “charismatic and ambitious.” The series is directed and written by Peter Kosminsky.
