2018 NFL Draft is on the schedule in late April, and Dallas Cowboys are preparing for it same as other 31 teams. During the free agency, they made moves and filled almost all of their holes, looking to add the best players available in the draft. But, one position remained empty. America’s Team has pressing need at safety, and despite a few quality players being available they still haven’ t signed anyone. What are they scheming?!
Before the offseason started, everyone believed that the first thing that Cowboys are going to do is to pursue a safety. Now, that free agency is calming down, and the draft is almost here, followed by pre-draft visits, the safety position is still there to be filled.
The first move regarding this position was to transfer Byron Jones to cornerback, which was his original position during the rookie season. When Cowboys announced this, it was evident that they are planning to bring in a safety. Jones is the most experienced safety on their roster, so now there is a significant hole to be filled.
Kavon Frazier showed glimpses of what he can do last year, but his playing time was limited. He will have more space in 2018, but this guy can’t carry a defense on his own. Jeff Heath bought the fans with his heart and kicking ability, but his level of quality leaves something to be desired. He surfaces on the big plays, but sometimes he is invisible during the games.
Last year’s rookie Xavier Woods showed promise, and he’s definitely the future of Big D franchise, but the same can’t be said of Frazier and Heath.
It was expected that Cowboys will sign a safety in FA, considering the names that were and still are available. When Tyrann Mathieu became available, everyone thought that team from Dallas would jump on the opportunity to snatch him. They didn’t raise an eyebrow. He ended up in Texas, but with Houston Texans.
Kenny Vaccaro, Eric Reid, and Tre Boston are all available, and with safety value, at an all-time low, they could be snatched for pennies. Last year Cowboys wanted to trade for Vaccaro, and now they don’t want him for free. Weird!
The goal is apparently to use the draft for this position. The rebuilding of this group through the draft would be similar to what they did the last term with cornerbacks.
Also, the rumor of Cowboys trading for Earl Thomas is still alive.
