Were Dallas Cowboys Wrong for Missing on Jeremy Maclin?

After June 2nd, the Cowboys have got a ton of cap space, and the team could make some significant moves during the offseason that can impact the roster once the regular season begins. Kansas City Chiefs have unexpectedly released their star WR Jeremy Maclin. After the release he was a free agent for few weeks, and subsequently signed for Baltimore Ravens. For some time he was an interesting target for the Boys too. Were the Cowboys wrong for not even considering a player of Maclin quality?

The Cowboys had the edge over most of the other teams in the NFL due to all the cap space, but they should first take care of their star offensive lineman Zack Martin. After they re-sign Martin, the Cowboys’ front office might go for available free agents. Maclin seemed as a good move, but the chance is gone now.

Maclin is a 29-year-old player and was always a productive wide receiver – both in Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. He was unfortunate to be on the teams which didn’t focus that much on activating their wide receivers on the field. For instance, the Chief QB Alex Smith had a season without a single TD pass completion to the WR, and after a year like that, WRs become a cap casualty, and something needs to be done.

Maclin has had two 1,000 plus yard seasons so far in his career and just two times in his career he has had 10 plus TDs in a season. Regardless, the veteran was a potentially interesting target for the Dallas Cowboys because the team needs a complimentary WR. Even though Dallas drafted Ryan Switzer and he has drawn attention in camp, his skills are specifically for the slot and not for the outside receiving position.

Adding Maclin to the mix would take some pressure off of Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams, who is the team’s second option, but who has had some mixed results so far. Maclin had ability to change the dynamics and even to help the team reach Super Bowl this year, but the Cowboys decided that they don’t want to pursue Maclin, and Baltimore showed more desire to sign the veteran. Maclin had a down year and teams thought that he can come at a reasonably low price. Ravens paid $11 million for a two year contract, something that the Cowboys weren’t ready to meet.

Do you think Dallas Cowboys made a mistake for not going after Maclin?
