The Grand Canyon is a beast of its own carved by the Colorado River in Arizona. Being 277 miles (446km) long, 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep, it’s hard to comprehend how vast this national treasure is. 

The canyon has been developed for over 70 million years through erosion, which exposes geologic columns. 

It’s so awe-inspiring that hikers brave the winter chill during a morning hike to see the sunrise at the Grand Canyon on New Year’s Day. 

Golden Gate Bridge

It’s big and it’s orange, but San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge has more significance than being a nice Instagram photo backdrop.

At the time it was built, the Golden Gate Bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge, making it an engineering spectacle. It also took on further symbolism during World War II since military personnel passed the bridge to and from the Pacific Theater. 

Fun fact: The official color of the bridge is called “international orange.”
