Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) permanently suspended a number of user accounts for abusive behaviors, which is a violation of the company’s policies per reuters.

The company made it clear in its rules that users who fail to follow its policies may result to temporary locking or permanent suspension of their Twitter accounts.

Twitter’s decision came after Ghostbuster actress Leslie Jones announced that she would quit using the social network because she is being abused and harassed by other users. She retweeted and shared some of the abusive tweets she received on Monday.

“I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the shit I got today… wrong,” said Ms. Jones, who has 250,000 followers.

Twitter bans Breitbart tech editor

According to Reuters, Breitbart tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos, who helped lead the abuse against Ms. Jones, was among those whose accounts were suspended by Twitter.

Some of the tweets toward Ms. Jones were racist as the users compared her to an ape. The user of the account, YellowArmedImposter tweeted, “Your Ghostbusters isn’t the first to have an ape in it.”

Ms. Jones tweeted, “I used to wonder why some celebs don’t have Twitter accts now I know.”

“Twitter I understand you got free speech I get it. But there has to be some guidelines when you let spread like that,” she wrote on a separate tweet.

Other celebrities also complained about the abusive behaviors of other users on Twitter’s platform. In September, actress and writer Lena Denham said she hired someone to tweet on her behalf because she felt that the site is no longer a safe space for her.

Twitter investing heavily on enforcement systems

In a statement, Twitter said the number of accounts violating its policies against abuse and harassment increased over the past 48 hours. The company issued warnings or permanently suspended the accounts of users who violated its policies.

“We know many people believe we have not done enough to curb this type of behavior on Twitter. We agree. We are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to better allow us to identify and take faster action on abuse as it’s happening and prevent repeat offenders,” according to the company.
