Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)-owned Periscope has reportedly been working an app for the upcoming Apple TV. The app could allow people to live-stream videos on the Apple TV platform. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to unveil a revamped set-top-box that is also equipped with Siri voice assistant and a standalone app store.
Periscope is one of the acquisitions that have brought tremendous glory to Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), and there appears to be more on the way. Nobody knows for sure what Apple has in its revamped Apple TV hardware, but rumors have it the hardware will come with Periscope support.
Livestreaming videos on Apple TV
It has emerged that Apple TV owners are about to have an enhanced television viewing experience supported by Periscope. The app that Periscope has been developing will enable Apple TV owners to watch livestreaming videos capture on smartphones.
Periscope’s livestreaming feature is considered useful for news correspondents who can use it to break video news from remote locations. You can use Periscope to capture live video footages and stream them directly on Twitter and also get others involved through real-time comments.
Integrating Periscope on Apple TV doesn’t look strange. The new Apple TV is widely expected to be an enriched multimedia center that also boasts gaming capabilities and a dedicated app store. As such, adding livestreaming to the mix with Periscope perfectly complements the multimedia nature of the new Apple TV.
Currently, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)’s Periscope boasts 10 million subscribers who watch over 40 years of video daily on the platform. Twitter reportedly paid about $120 million to acquire Periscope.
Setting more video initiatives in motion
Bringing Periscope to Apple TV could trigger other social networks to carefully and seriously think about video and television offering. Besides Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) also have serious online video ambitions.
Facebook claims that it gets more than 4 billion video views each day and Google’s YouTube is getting enriched with a premium version of the service on the way.
