Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (KRX:005935) is aiming to release its new flagship smartphone—the Galaxy S5 possibly integrated with an iris scanner on April.

Speculations are growing within the smartphone industry that the South Korean electronics giant is developing the Galaxy S5 with killer features including the iris scanner to provide more security to consumers and increase its competitiveness against Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL). Many believed that Samsung’s eye-scanner will outshine the TouchID or fingerprint scanner of the iPhone 5S in terms of security.

Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of the mobile business of Samsung Electronics (KRX:005935) told Bloomberg that the Galaxy S5 will be available in the market approximately similar to the release data of the previous models of the smartphone. The company introduced the Galaxy S4 in March, and it hit the stores by April last year.

According to Lee, “We’ve been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time. When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.”

With regard to the iris scanner, Lee did not provide a definite answer whether Samsung Electronics (KRX:005935) will include it as one of the features of the Galaxy S5. She said, “Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology. We are studying the possibility but can’t really say whether we will have it or not on the S5.”

However, she emphasized that the company developed the Galaxy S5 with a different appearance and finish compared with the older versions of the device. “When we moved to S4 from S3, it’s partly true that consumers couldn’t really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn’t as big. For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it’s about the display and the feel of the cover.”

There are rumors that the Galaxy S5 will sport diamond-like metal surface. Earlier reports indicate that Samsung Electronics (KRX:005935) is processing carbon with high temperatures and pressures to create a synthetic diamond material for the smartphone.

Many speculated that the Galaxy S5 has a curved screen just like the Galaxy Round, which was introduced by company in South Korea only last November. Last week, Samsung Electronics (KRX:005935) introduced unveiled its 105-inch television with a curved screen, thus strengthening rumors that its next flagship smartphone will sport a curve display with a diamond-like metal surface.
