Rampage Projected To Earn $36 Million On Opening Weekend

Rampage movie is about to get released by New Line Cinema, and we already have the early box office projections. Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming action-thriller looks good at the moment. The first projections estimate that Rampage is going to earn close to $35 million on its opening weekend. This news came after NLC moved the premiere of this movie from April 20th to April 13th.

As you probably know New Line Cinema decided to pull this move because Avengers: Infinity War also had their date rescheduled. Instead of premiering on May the 4th, Marvel’s latest superhero installment will now air on April 27th. New Avengers movie is one of the most anticipated releases of the year, so Rampage producers needed to make space between two films. They now have two weeks of theatrical release for their monster-filled blockbuster before Avengers hit the screen. And they need to make a good run during this time, because Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, and the gang will attract most of the viewers.

The tracking data released yesterday shows that there is 44% definite interest in Rampage, while only 9% of male audiences listed Rampage as their first choice. At the moment these numbers don’t look too impressive. But when the movie gets even closer to its release, the tide might shift. This usually happens because the studio makes an additional effort promoting their project close to the opening weekend.

For example here are movies that grossed quite more than their early projections predicted. Deadpool had a $50 million forecast and earned $123.3 million on opening weekend, and Black Panther went with $100 million projection but earned $202 million. So, much can change in short amount of time, and NLC will hope that Rampage predictions will jump when the release date approaches.

Another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is Dwayne Johnson’s star power. The man has a huge fan base and can promote movies like nobody else in the industry. His most recent box office success Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle opened to ‘only’ $36 million. It afterward went to make $942 million. Don’t forget that it was in theaters at the same time with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Jumanji succeeded to go this far with $90 million budget.

Now, we don’t know how big is the budget behind Rampage, but with Dwayne Johnson at the helm, and with his most-recent achievements we believe that it can produce similar box office results as Jumanji.
