In the world of Japanese light novels, Kugane Maruyama is definitely one of the most prominent figures. His story “Overlord” began its serialization in 2010, and soon afterward it inspired various adaptations, including the anime series, which aired between July and September 2015.

The first season of the anime, which comprises 13 episodes, was well-received and it can be said that it even made the title alone more popular, since both Overlord light novel and manga had over 2 million copies in circulation in September 2015. It is important to note that the anime was not that well-received only in Japan, but worldwide, as well. Thus, the creators were encouraged to start thinking about the second season.

“Overlord” Season 1 covers just the first three volumes of the novel, and there have been eleven volumes so far, so we are sure that there is enough material for another batch of episodes. According to Overlord Wiki, it is highly likely that the upcoming season will feature Carne Village, as Lupus Regina will reside there.

Furthermore, there are some speculations which suggest that we will have the opportunity to meet Lizardmen, a group of criminals featured only in the manga adaptation so far. However, we heard about these villains in the finale episode of Season 1 when Albedo, the protagonist, mentioned them, so perhaps that was only a way to introduce them and then elaborate on their story in Season 2.

Finally, there is also a possibility of including some events which belong to volume five and six of the novel. That sounds rather interesting, don’t you think?

Overlord Season 2 Release Date

Unfortunately, we still don’t know whether the Overlord renewal is even in pre-production or not, but the good news is that Madhouse Studio hasn’t mentioned anything about canceling the upcoming season, either. It has been rumored that they might deliver it by the end of 2017. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope the rumors will come true.

In the LN, they were not criminals just a collection of villages that kept to themselves (and with the Slane Theocracy running around, can we blame them?). Ainz decided to see if Lizardmen created stronger undead than humans, that was it. A science experiment at the cost of their (and possibly, but unlikely, their entire species) lives.
