About One-Punch Man

One-Punch Man is a manga series created by manga-artist who presents himself under the pseudonym One. The series started to air back in 2009 and in three-years-time it became extremely popular only to reach 7.9 million hits in 2012.

One-Punch Man revolves around Saitama who is famous for his ability to knock down his opponent by only one punch. Saitama is in fact a highly powerful superhero who fights against the evil. Or he used to fight actually. Namely, due to the lack of those from the bad side who could stand up to him, he started searching for someone who can measure up against his strength.

Shueisha’s Young Jump Web Comics started to air the manga’s remake in 2012. Yusuke Murata, a Japanese manga artist, was in charge of illustrating the remake which consisted of chapters collected together to form tankōbon volumes. Twelve of these chapters went out on December 2, 2016.

Madhouse released the adaptation of anime series in Japan near the end of 2015 and the English version was conceived in 2016.

At this moment, the series is having its second season on air.

Plot One-Punch Man

On an Earth-like super-continent planet, strange monsters have been mysteriously appearing and causing disasters resulting in the world’s superheroes rising to combat them alongside the local supervillains. Saitama, the protagonist of the series, is the strongest hero alive in the entire franchise, hailing from the metropolis of City Z who easily defeats the monsters or other villains with a single punch to the point where monsters just explode when struck. However, due to his limitless strength, Saitama has become bored with his power and is constantly trying to find stronger opponents who can present a challenge to him.

As Saitama is active as a hero, he meets various other heroes and villains. He gets a disciple in the form of the cyborg Genos and consequently joins the Hero Association in order to gain official recognition. Despite defeating many strong monsters that even the Heroes Association’s top members are unable to defeat, Saitama struggles to gain respect. Also, he never takes the credit for defeating a monster, which instead falls on King, who was promoted to an S-class hero. Most people look down on him due to his plain physical appearance and some accuse him of being a counterfeit hero. Only a small number of individuals in the series recognize his talent and humility towards others, although this later changes when the whole of the Hero Association witness Saitama’s true strength.

One Punch Man -> Main characters

Saitama

Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa (Japanese); Max Mittelman (English)

Hero name: “Bald Cape” (ハゲマント Hagemanto)

Saitama is the main character of the story with enormous strength, remarkable skills and unbreakable spirit. As opposed to other superheroes, Saitama is unable to fly because his powers are based on human properties and characteristics.

He is holding Rank 39, when it comes to the web comic and his current job is to protect Z-City from some Mysterious Beings. No one can fight him back, since his punch takes his opponents down only by one swing. Not even Boros, who is also very powerful, cannot stand up against his strength. In their mutual fight Boros was aware of the fact that Saitama is not giving his best but is still as easily managing to beat him down. No one knows the real scope of Saitama’s powers.

When the series started, Saitama already had some experience in fighting against the monsters. Only 3 years before the events in the series started he managed to protect a child from a monster. Soon afterwards he started his trainings which consisted of 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats and on the top of that he ran 10km every day. The merits for his immense strength he overwrites to this training and his strong will to endure it. However, many of his opponents believe that this training of his could not have led him to such a super-human powers. According to them, he already owned some of these abilities which only started to manifest the moment he started his training. One of the bad sides of his training, according to him, would be the loss of his hair, and possibly emotions.

At the beginning of the series, Saitama is bored because he can’t seem to find a decent opponent. On the top of that, due to his power he slowly becomes deprived of emotions. But, he prefers to stay behind the eyes of people, not seeking for any type or recognition. He solely admits that he finds his “super heroism” amusing, and quite often does he disregard his reputation.

Due to his abilities and his characteristics, many find him fascinating to be around with. Even in his appearance he differs from other characters. His head is of elliptical shape and his shoulders are sloping.

Genos

Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa (Japanese); Zach Aguilar (English)

Hero name: “Demon Cyborg” (鬼サイボーグ Oni Saibōgu)

On the other hand we have Genos, who becomes a Saitama’s disciple. Genos tends to learn as much as he can from Saitama. He also doesn’t believe that the source of Saitama’s power is his training and through observing Saitama on everyday basis he tries to figure out where his strength actually stems from. Together they take a superhero test where Genos is placed into S-class.

Genos has had an extremely difficult life before the events of the series start to happen. His family was killed by a cyborg and he himself was also nearly killed. His body was completely wrecked after this, and scientist modified his body to turn him into a cyborg with tremendous skills and powers.

He is a good friend of Saitama’s, which proves to everyone that Saitama can have friends after all and connect with others, which at first does seem surprising.
