BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) CEO John Chen at a public appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas talked about the growth that the company has made in a year. He said that the Canadian company is no more in financial trouble, and it already achieved cash flow break even in the last quarter itself (earlier than expected).
Financially stable BlackBerry explores more segment
Chen said that since things are improving, “Now the fun begins,” primarily focusing on the next big move related to the Internet of Things. Chen noted that 50 million cars were running on BlackBerry software while 400 million ASIC chips were shipped by it. Since long, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB)’s services are known for the best available privacy and security features, and the Internet of Things needs exactly the same.
“The best thing I inherited when I came in from the decades’ experience of this company is the technology,” said Chen. “Our technology is broad and deep.”
Internet of Medical Things
To detail on the IoT plans, Chen invited Patrick Soon-Shiong, a BlackBerry partner, who runs NanHealth. Shiong, a former scientist at NASA, talked about ‘Internet of Medical Things’ that complies with HIPPA regulations while collecting medical data. Shiong referred to a term called “health boxes” at homes that can be connected to a device similar to FitBit to constantly monitor health related data. Such a device would be powered by a “universal medical identifier,” told Shiong.
Soon-Shiong said that it will be great to have a device with a capability of browsing through the genome of three billion bases of individuals just like Google Maps. Shiong told that with BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB)’s IoT platform this can become possible by connecting medical devices to the cloud securely.
At the CES, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) informed that it will launch BBM on the Android Wear in “early 2015.” According to the CEO, the primary aim of bringing BBM to the Android Wear is to increase the market of the platform with focus on improving ad yields. Chen told that more information on the upcoming products will be presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.
