It was disclosed by Sony that the following sequel of the Men in Black is planned for May 17, 2019. Although the movie still hasn’t been named, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum do have the script. Sadly, the original characters of the Men in Black, Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, will not appear in the installment.
Although we will miss Jones and Smith, it was said by Sony that the story will take place in the same universe that was set in the past Man in Black movies. The focus will be more on a global scale, as it will feature a secret organization which safeguards the earth from evil aliens in the universe. The spotlight of the story will be on new characters of Men in Black who are pursuing villain from outer space.
Steven Spielberg will be the movie’s executive producer, whereas Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will be the producers. Regarding the writing, there is no director just yet, but there are some potential candidates they are negotiating with.
It was a real surprise once they announced the sequel, as it has been rumored that it will be a mix of 21 Jump Street and Men in Black. There were gossips that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, the stars of 21 Jump Street, will take on the roles of the Men in Black. It was said that Sony let go of the idea of a mashup since it was way too complicated, but the newest reports claim that they are still developing the plan.
When it comes to what fans can expect in terms of the continuation of the story of the Men in Black, Parkes said that they are creating a movie which will stick to the original core of the franchise.
“It’s so rare to get to the end of the script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place.”
