McLaren is raising the bar with this new innovative, authentic and slightly crazy wrap option that is available on the 570GT. It is called Feather Wrap, and if you are a customer who loves nature, this may be just the thing for you. The company’s bespoke division named MSO created this intriguing layer by hand. Specialists over there needed 300 hours, and they have used almost 10,000 carbon-veined artificial feathers.

Robin Crane, McLaren’s Biomimicry Specialist, said: “Our engineers and designers have long been inspired by nature in our aim to create the lightest and most aerodynamic shapes on the road. We call this biomimicry.”

He added: “And it was on a beautiful day walking around our Woking campus that one of us looked up at the birds circling our lake, then picked up a feather from the ground and placed it on a car… That turned into a conversation with the craftsmen and women at MSO that led to the creation of the Feather Wrap.”

The feathers are seven centimeters long and covered with a pearlescent lacquer, and as you can see, they are applied to the vehicle parallel to the forward direction. The purpose of the feathers is to act like grooves, and they improve the aerodynamics of the car and reduce drag. At high speed they start to vibrate thus further reducing drag and needless to say, these feathers make McLaren 570GT look amazing.

“We’re not usually ones to crow about our achievements but I think we’ve scored a birdie with this one,” continued Crane. You can order the 570GT with Feather Wrap on April 1, 2017, and no, this is not a joke.
