Written, co-produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, The Last Airbender is an action fantasy adaptation of the animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender which aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. Shyamalan’s film was released soon after the third season of the series had ended, in June 2010. And now, seven years later, we finally have the officially confirmed news about the movie renewal. The director himself has revealed that he is planning to work on The Last Airbender 2.

However, many people are wondering: why would he do that? Not only did the 2010’s adaptation receive bad reviews, but it was even said to be “one of the worst films ever made.” Some tried to find an explanation for his failure blaming the actors or the budget, while others think it’s simply his fault. But, it seems that none of those comments and bad reviews matter to Shyamalan himself, as he claims he still does not understand why people didn’t like it. “It’s really weird because on the show the average age was, like, 9 years old. My child was 9 years old. You could make it one of two ways. You could make it for that same audience, which is what I did — for 9 and 10-year-olds — or you could do the Transformers version and have Megan Fox,” he added.

Only a small number of people said they actually liked the adaptation, and these are primarily the ones who haven’t watched the Avatar series, so they have nothing to compare it with and see the inconsistencies. The Last Airbender cast is among the numerous things that Avatar fans didn’t like about the adaptation and that they hope will be different in the sequel. In addition to this, most of them believe that some of the most important parts were left out, such as the scene when Freedom Fighters appear. Another thing that they claim was getting on their nerves was the pronunciation of names, together with bad make-up.

All things considered, it seems like The Last Airbender 2 is not that highly anticipated, but, who knows, perhaps M. Night Shyamalan realizes where he has made mistakes with the previous project and delivers an adaptation worth watching. The exact release date has not been mentioned yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out more about the upcoming movie.
