Jaguar decided to revive their classic car – the XKSS model. The new vehicle, which has been made for the first time since 1957, has been presented at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. In total, nine XKSS units will be built in the UK, and the deliveries will take place next year. The cars will be produced in a classic way, or in other words, they will be hand-built.

The Jaguar XKSS which we had a chance to see in LA will only serve as a blueprint to other nine cars. Each one will have period chassis numbers from the original model. That will definitely increase their price, and one car will cost £1 million or about $1.5 million.

It took Jaguar Classic division 18 months to conduct a research how to produce a car that will be almost identical to the 1957 model. They finally found a way to do so, but the minor changes which are to improve passengers safety are inevitable. Of course, the company will produce their new vehicles based on the original design drawings. In addition, they will include all the parts which were on the original Jaguar.
Just like the 1957 model, the new car will have a magnesium alloy body. However, a new styling buck will be produced, since the original was non-existent. Moreover, the original frames are used, and the engineers are creating CAD in order to support the foundations of the chassis. The new bespoke parts will be crafted by frame maker Reynolds and those will be bronze-welded, just like the chassis tubes from the original model.
The new Jaguar XKSS will sport four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes with a Plessey pump. In addition, Dunlop tires and magnesium alloy wheels will also be included. Speaking of the engine, a 3.4-liter six D-Type is the one which will be located in the new vehicle. This powerplant will produce 262 hp, and some of the new parts such as new cast iron blocks, latest cast cylinder heads and three Weber DC03 carburetors will be on the engine.
The interior will be completely the same. As a driver, you will get to enjoy a steering wheel made of wood, brass knobs on the dashboard and authentic leather seats. It will take 10,000 work hours to manufacture a single car.
Jaguar Classic engineering manager, Kev Riches declared: “The XKSS is one of the most important cars in Jaguar’s history, and we are committed to making the ‘new original’ version absolutely faithful to the period car in every way. From the number, type and position of all the rivets used – there are more than 2,000 in total – to the Smiths gauges on the dashboard, everything is the same as the original cars because that is the way it should be.”
