Fortinet Inc News: PROTUR Hotels Chooses Fortinet to Secure Wireless Network

Spanish Hotel Chain Deploys More Than 150 FortiAP Appliances in 17 Establishments Across the Country

Sunnyvale, July 21, 2014 – Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) – a global leader in high-performance network security – today announced that popular Spanish hotel chain PROTUR Hotels has chosen Fortinet’s technology to secure its wireless networks in all establishments, a move that helps provide customers with a continuously safe and reliable Internet experience. Altogether, PROTUR Hotels implemented Fortinet’s FortiGate-300D next-generation firewall appliances, more than 150 FortiAP-221 and FortiAP-222 thin wireless access points and a FortiAnalyzer network security logging, analysis and reporting appliance. The hotel chain also relies on Fortinet’s FortiGuard Web Filtering services for blocking access to inappropriate and dangerous websites.

PROTUR Hotels owns 17 properties located on some of the most attractive beaches and tourist destinations throughout the island of Mallorca. Throughout its 30-year history, the hotel chain has regularly implemented the latest technology with the aim of staying competitive, improving customer experience and offering visitors the most comfortable and satisfying stay possible. Acccording to the PROTUR Hotels sales team “having secure, fast and efficient WiFi access at the hotel is a service increasingly considered by the customers when choosing their accommodation.”

In light of the value that a safe and efficient Internet connection brings to clients, the chain decided to improve security across its WiFi infrastructure. After conducting an analysis of competing wireless security products, PROTUR Hotels decided to replace its existing Cisco devices with Fortinet solutions, which included the addition of FortiAP thin access points for secure wireless Internet access and FortiGate next-generation firewall appliances offering VPN, firewall, IPS and anti-virus capabilities. Fortinet’s ability to implement a secure and integrated wireless solution to an existing wired network — a capability not offered by any competing vendors — was one of the driving factors in PROTUR Hotel´s decision to choose Fortinet for its refresh.

For secure WiFi coverage in each establishment, PROTUR Hotels also installed 148 FortiAP-221Cs, Fortinet’s indoor access points with a discrete design, and 21 FortiAP-222 outdoor access points, which both support the 802.11ac wireless standard and provide data transfer rates of up to 867 Mbps.

Acting as a wireless controller for FortiAP thin access points, the FortiGate-300D network security platform deployed in cluster mode is able to centrally manage and control all access points while also helping to provide secure wireless Internet access in case of failure from another FortiGate appliance.

PROTUR Hotels also relies on Fortinet’s FortiGuard Web Filtering services to block access to inappropriate and dangerous websites that may contain phishing/pharming attacks, spyware and other harmful malware. FortiGuard Labs is Fortinet’s threat research and response team, comprised of more than 200 security engineers and forensics analysts around the globe that provide real-time security updates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Finally, by leveraging Fortinet’s FortiAnalyzer network security logging, analysis and reporting appliance, PROTUR Hotels is now able to securely collect log data from the FortiGate appliances as well as generate technical reports and statistics on all security events.

Tying it all together, Fortinet’s partner BarraIT facilitated a migration that was fast, efficient and conducted without a hitch.

Looking ahead to the future, PROTUR Hotels plans to connect all of its hotels via wireless high-speed solutions controlled from its headquarters.
