Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) launched a redesigned Iconic Mustang sports car globally. The mean machine got the sleeker look to increase the brand’s reputation outside the United States. Ford is the second largest automobile company, and is eyeing Asian and European market with its new Mustang. The car will be launched in both the continents, in 2015.
Mustang contributes much more than just revenues
Ford’s global design chief J Mays said on Thursday, “This was a chance to bring Mustang and actually lift the rest of the brand up with it.” He said that the car was redesigned to compliment the other cars sold by Ford.
Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) earned around 3% of revenue from Mustang, in the United States, during the first 11 months of fiscal 2013. However, according to chief operating officer Mark Fields, the car has contributes more than that to uplift the image of Ford.
The new machine was launched by Fields, chief executive Alan Mulally and other top Ford Executives in six cities; Dearborn, Michigan, Shanghai, Sydney, Barcelona, New York and Los Angeles.
Mustang would be available for purchase in the United States, in the next fall, followed by Europe, in the first half of 2015, and, in Asia, in the second half of 2015.
Car retains American-ness
Latest Mustang is adorned with trapezoid front grille that gives it more upper class look compared to its predecessors.
Mustang has been redesigned so as to keep the “American-ness” in the feel and look. For instance, the car will have the “tri-bar” tail lights, which are a trademark since the 1960s.
Designs like “fake scoops” or cutouts on the side of the car cannot be seen in the new version. Apart from that hockey stick like design on the lower section of the car also disappears in the new car.
The ground clearance of the new Mustang is 1.5 inches lower than the predecessor. The suspension system has been reworked, and will be offered with three powertrain options, including a 2.3 liter turbocharged engine.
Hal Sperlich, the chief architect of the original Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) Mustang said that he is keen to bring a low budget sports car that was more thrilling than the Focus, and would allure the younger buyers.
