The world’s highest-paid actor Dwayne Johnson has recently talked about his decision to join the cast of the upcoming superhero movie Shazam! which is scheduled to air in 2019. You can watch the whole Q&A session on YouTube, but keep reading to find out about some of the reasons Johnson mentioned.

If we look back at The Rock’s numerous roles, we can notice that he almost always takes on the role of the ‘good guy’ and he usually plays the main character or the co-lead role. Bearing this in mind, one may say that it would be at least interesting for the actor to be the ‘bad guy’ for a change. Thus the role of supervillain Black Adam in the Shazam franchise sounds like a great opportunity. Black Adam is the archenemy of the main superhero Captain Marvel/Shazam.

The fact that Black Adam is a villain, contrary to Johnson’s other characters, is not the only thing that makes it tempting for the actor to try out the new role. He claims he has always liked this particular character. “I’ve loved the role of Black Adam. I love that he starts off as a slave, that he felt like he was wronged. I’ve just loved that backstory. I think that Black Adam has always been, to me, the most intriguing superhero”, The Rock explains.

It is also interesting to mention that the superstar actor had been related to Black Adam and even other Shazam characters, such as Lobo and Shazam himself, even before it was officially announced that he would take part in the movie. Johnson was supposed to work on Lobo movie as well, but that project was never realized.

The new Shazam! movie is being directed by Geoff Johns. It is still only in development, so we should not expect to see it come out anytime soon, especially because it has been rumored that the original release date (April 2019) might be pushed back.
