Djokovic coming to Acapulco for the first time

Due to the problem with his shoulder, Novak Djokovic’s initial plan was to head back to tennis at Indian Wells in the desert of California. However, the Serbian player seemed to have had second thoughts as he decided to include Acapulco tournament in his ATP World Tour.

Djokovic, who is currently ranked world No. 2 in men’s singles tennis, surprised everyone with his decision to take a card to Acapulco, in the midst of two Master tournaments.

On his Twitter account he wrote:

“Great news, you’ll see me back on court next week in Acapulco. Did you miss me?”

Tournament director Raul Zurutuza did not hide the excitement that a Serb would be coming to Mexico. Thus, Djokovic will be joining the list of players which already features some of the strongest ones inside the Top 10, who will be competing for 1.633.690 US dollars.

“When we saw the chance we did not hesitate to offer an invitation [to Djokovic]. We knew it was tough, but we were gladly surprised when we got his answer,” Raus stated. “Novak is thrilled to come to Acapulco for the first time and to be a part of the best field in the tournament’s history.”

So, besides Djokovic, there will be 5 more players from Top 10.

“This is great news for the tournament. We’re very pleased to have the World No. 2 in the Acapulco field. The public will be very happy and we’re treating it like a big party,” said Raul Zurutuza. “Novak and Rafa are two great players that give very important value to the tournament. Also having Raonic, del Potro and Goffin in the field will make this a great event.”
