We can all agree that this year has been marked by superhero movies in a way, and the top two among them are without a doubt “Deadpool” and “Suicide Squad.” However, we should also note that the two movies attracted attention for different reasons. Having gone through some rough time, “Deadpool” production team eventually managed to bring the great antihero to life and deliver the film, which turned out to be a blockbuster.

As for “Suicide Squad,” on the other hand, it was released as the third title in DC Extended Universe franchise, and it did bring a lot of money, but it was not nearly as successful as “Deadpool.” Whatever the reasons for their popularity were, both of these movies are now eligible for Oscar nominations in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The last time a film inspired by a comic book won the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar was in 1991 (Warren Beatty’s “Dick Tracy”).

There are five other finalists for this category. According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, these are the following: “A Man Called Ove,” “The Dressmaker,” “Star Trek Beyond,” “Hail, Caesar!” and “Florence Foster Jenkins.” The Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch of the Academy has scheduled a meeting for January 7 when its members will choose three out of seven previously listed titles judging by ten-minute excerpts of the movies.

Now let us go back to “Deadpool” and “Suicide Squad.” It’s not that hard to guess why these two are nominated for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Just remember Ryan Reynolds’s disfigured appearance after Wade Wilson’s clash with Francis. When it comes to “Suicide Squad,” we can find even more examples, including Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie), El Diablo (portrayed by Jay Hernandez) and, of course, Jared Leto’s character, Joker.

Honestly, it is rather unlikely that “Deadpool” and “Suicide Squad” will be among the three movies which are to be chosen in January, but there may also be a possibility of receiving another Academy Award nomination. “Deadpool” has already received two Golden Globe nominations, while “Suicide Squad” is among nominees for People’s Choice Awards.
