The Curse of Oak Island is a popular show that follows Rick and Marty Lagina in their search for treasure. Oak Island is located just off Nova Scotia, and numerous people have tried to unveil the mysteries of this island for a long time. The Lagina brothers are determined to find the treasure, and they have the cutting-edge equipment and experts in the team to help them turn this Island upside down. The TV Show started to air in January 2014 and currently the fourth season is coming to an end. Check out some facts about our main characters.
Rick’s obsession with the treasure started in 1965
When Rick was 11, he read an article in the Readers Digest about treasure on the Island and he became interested. The article was about the treasure and everything that had been found which indicated something was buried somewhere on the island. Rick and Marty’s father showed them another article, this time from The Wall Street Journal and both of them were fascinated. Ever since that moment, Rick knew that he wanted to go to the island and investigate.
Rick and Marty’s Tour Company
Sometime during their excavations and search, the Lagina brothers decided to start a tour company, which would lead guests through the Oak Island legends, found items and the visitors also have a chance to see the Money Pit as well as Borehole 10-X. There is even a small museum which you can visit and where the all mysterious artifacts are placed.
Marty studied at Michigan Tech where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma fraternities. After he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1977, he attended Law School at the University, from which he graduated in 1982. He established Terra Energy, Ltd., an oil and gas exploration and production company which he sold to CMS Energy for $60 million.
The Lagina’s brothers have always got along, and the entire family is close-knit. They come from Kingsford, Michigan and Marty’s son Alex also became an engineer, just like his dad. The family relationship is important because it makes it easier to focus on the job, instead of wasting your time arguing and solving family issues.
Back in the early 2000s, Marty founded a 3-acre Winery Row 7, and since then he purchased Villa Mari Vineyards in Traverse City, Michigan. While he is doing the work on the island, his son helps him with the family business. Besides treasure, Marty develops different ways of growing grapes for the wine, while his favorite is red wine.
Ever since The Curse of Oak Island has started to air, the Lagina brother’s net worth has leaped drastically. In the beginning, Rick and Marty’s net worth was $500,000 and $2 million respectively. Now, after three years, Rick’s net worth has jumped to $2 million, while Marty’s is estimated at $100 million!
Issue with the permits
It was difficult for Lagina brothers to acquire the permits that would allow them to work in Canada. Luckily, they managed to fight with the paperwork, and they started looking for the lost treasure of Oak Island.
Oak Island Legends
There are several theories and legends about the treasure, and the most common one is that pirates hid it somewhere on the Island. So far, human bone fragments, platform and coins and metal that date from 1795 and before have been found. Also, a letter “G” was found on a large rock, and it is believed that the letter is a symbol coming from Freemasons. Daniel McGinnis was one of the originators of the treasure hunt, and the foundation of the dwelling he lived in was discovered as well. Some people also believe that Templar Knights are the ones who brought the treasure and buried it.
Oak Island Tragedy
There have been many people who tried to find the treasure, but all of them failed. These researchers sometimes met with paranormal occurrences and sometimes this had tragical consequences. The most famous tragedy happened in 1965 when four explorers tragically lost their lives, with one of them falling into a shaft and the other three trying to save him. This is known as the Restall Tragedy.
Marty’s Wind Turbine Company
Although Marty desperately wants to find the treasure, he owns a large wind turbine company. With the money from the Terra Energy sale, he established Heritage Sustainable and his wind turbine business is the biggest in the country’s mid-west. Marty has huge plans, as his company will build 60 new turbines in Missaukee, Michigan.
