Having beaten France in this year’s final, Portugal won Euro 2016. This, of course, meant a major success to all squad members, but it was their captain Cristiano Ronaldo who seemed to be particularly thrilled about their victory. He gave a rather emotional speech after the match, saying that none of his individual trophies was as nearly important to him as their Euro 2016 triumph. He has won four domestic titles and the Champions League three times, but all of these combined still cannot compete with one national team medal, Ronaldo claims.

Four months after the joyful event, we can finally see what ‘the emotional Ronaldo’ looks like, as the video in which he gives the speech has been recently released. He has often been described as “selfish and self-centered” so far, but now we get to see his other side as well. With true passion, Ronaldo made sure everyone realized how significant this success with the national team was to him, emphasizing the importance of having the manager Fernando Santos as a part of their squad. He said: “I would like to thank this man right here. Without him, none of this would be possible.”

Ronaldo was visibly emotional on the pitch at the Stade de France, as we could see him cry after the match, but he didn’t refrain from sharing his feelings with the rest of the squad and staff in the dressing room either. He claimed that that was one of the happiest days of his life, saying “Forget the individual trophies, Champions League, this one right here, is the happiest moment of my life. I have cried three or four times already.” He also added: “I could repeat this 100 times. I am so happy. This is the trophy that was missing.”

Finally, he expressed his opinion that they truly deserved that trophy and he highlighted that they were the first team to achieve that in the history of Portugal.
