The Ford latest Raptor has proven to be successful in off-road racing, but it will get a competition in the new Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. Chevrolet wants its four-wheel drive truck to compete in Best in the Desert’s off-road race that starts in Las Vegas and goes to Reno.

The ZR2 will be equipped with a full roll cage, racing seats with five-point harnesses and the upgraded version of the Multimatic shocks. Among other features, you can find a 44-gallon fuel tank, a GPS system, a two-way radio and racing lights. Instead of stock Goodyear Duratracs, the engineers equipped the new ZR2 with BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires, while the wheels remain unchanged. Under the hood is a stock 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine which is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Chad Hall of Hall Racing will have the honor to drive the new Colorado ZR2 that is going to enter class 7300 which consists of stock production midsize pickups and SUVs. Chevy has multiple goals with its racing program. Initially, it will show the extreme durability of the new Colorado, while it will also point towards a series of upcoming aftermarket parts for the Chevrolet Performance.

Vegas to Reno is the longest and certainly one of the most demanding off-road races in the entire country. We expect to see more than 350 teams at the starting line today, and each of them will try to cross 550 miles of Nevadan slit, rocks, dry lake beds to win. Hall will definitely have to use the ZR2’s 4WD drive as well as front and rear differential lockers. If you want to know more about this race, you can always visit the official website.
