Google released an over the air Android N update to improve performance for all Android N devices, which is well ahead of the first scheduled update.

The The Android N update which was to help address some performance issues began to roll out on late Thursday, to Android N beta testers. The update is only available for the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9 and Nexus 9 4G. The other devices have been left out. The update, 30MB in size is being given out to devices that are enrolled in the Android Beta Program.

The first preview released by Google for the Android N was on March 9, and Google mentioned there are plans to release newer versions for the upcoming four to six weeks. There are five preview releases planned before the last preview, due in third quarter. The plan is that by June; developers will be able to publish apps to beta-enrolled devices running Android N.

The Android N update does not include updates for the Pixel C, but the Android N will encompass it. Early impressions of the Pixel C hardware were positive, but analysts think that Android lets the hardware down. This is because they believe that the Pixel C was supposed to run the Chrome Operating System as compared to the Android it is now running, as reported by Ars Technica.

Ars Technica claims that the Pixel’s irregularities stem from the fact that the Pixel C was originally a Chrome OS device but along the way it got cancelled. It had been set as an all-touch version of Chrome OS and at some point, the plans were shelved-necessitating a switch to Android.

Names for Android N are already up in the air. A report by Android Police showed that Google has been calling it New York Cheesecake internally for the time being and are surveying users through their Google Opinion Rewards application so they can help in choosing a name for when the product is done.

Google has changed names for other operating systems before, before their public release. Android K was codenamed Key Lime Pie while in the development stage and during the general release they changed it to KitKat, and Android L was codenamed Lemon Meringue Pie before it eventually changed to Lollipop. The suggestions that were put in the survey included Napoleon, Nut brittle, Nachos, Nori, Noodles, Nougat and Neapolitan ice cream.
