Body positivity is a big deal at the moment but so is plastic surgery. Surgical enhancement has become the status quo in many countries and according to Grand View Research; the global cosmetic surgery market will bring in over $43 billion by 2025.

Patients want natural results and minimal downtime and with the rise of social media and filters, surgeons have to be more aware of setting realistic expectations than ever before.

Let’s take a glance at some of the most popular trends from around the world.

Plastic Surgery is Still Exceptionally Popular in the USA

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, close to 1.8 million cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in the USA in 2017, with liposuction, breast augmentation, and rhinoplasty is the most popular.

There has also been a massive increase in non-invasive treatments such as Botox in recent years, with millennials making up the majority of patients. In 2018, over 70% of all US surgeons were treating patients under 30 with cosmetic injectables.

The UK Loves Injectable Treatments

Injectable treatments such as fillers and Botox are more popular in the UK than most other countries. Many say it comes down to people living in a quick-fix culture and watching shows such as Love Island that has made injectable treatments more popular.

According to Academy Face & Body, more patients want comparable surgical results without having to worry about risks or downtime, which fits in with why cosmetic injectables are one of the top procedures in the UK.

Body contouring is also popular in the UK, with the Brazilian Butt Lift being at the top of the list.

Brazil is Right Up There with the USA

Brazil carries out the second-highest number of plastic surgery procedures in the world, with breast and buttock augmentation being in high demand. A large percentage of Brazilians believe that they are known for their looks, which is why they put such a big emphasis on having a good-looking body. In Brazil, you can find a surgeon just as easily as a hairdresser and many of the procedures are tax-deductible, which makes it even easier for people to alter their bodies and faces.

East Asia Isn’t Far Behind

In Eastern Asia, close to 1 million plastic surgery procedures are performed every year. Publications such as the New Yorker have even named South Korea “the world’s plastic surgery capital”. In Gangnam alone, there are at least 500 clinics that offer cosmetic procedures. Asia also has a cosmetic surgery tourism industry that generates over £400 million every year.

Skin whitening, nose jobs, facial fillers, and eyelid surgery are the most popular procedures in Asia and according to Business Insider; every third woman between the ages of 19 and 29 has had something done. K-pop culture has believed to be one of the biggest influences in this growing cosmetic surgery trend.

These trends are followed by various clinics such as Clarity Medspa.

Rhinoplasty is performed seven times more in Iran than America, a procedure that is also incredibly popular in Lebanon, where 1.5 million plastic procedures are carried out every year. Many people from this region are unhappy with the shape of their noses, particularly women, which is why they make up the majority of rhinoplasty patients in this part of the world.

The US, Brazil, Asia, Italy, and Mexico are still responsible for the highest percentage of cosmetic procedures in the world but other countries are definitely catching up. Instagram culture and camera filters are shaping the way people define beauty, so we can expect to see an ongoing increase in the popularity of cosmetic surgery in the coming year.
