5 players on Dallas Cowboys roster with the biggest boom-or-bust potential
Like every year, there are players in Dallas Cowboys squad that are on the crossroad. They can either show fantastic talent and start the road to Pro Bowl filled future, but on the other hand, they could go bust and even get cut from the team and maybe even from the league.
We are not talking about Dak Prescott or Ezekiel Elliott, they proved themselves and we expect to see even better performances in the upcoming season, especially from the young quarterback. When looking for players to add to the list, we wage in how much they can help their team if they step up but also how close they are to being out.
Rico Gathers, TE
This will be the third, and maybe the final, year for Rico Gathers. Being 6’6″ 285 lbs, it is incredible how well he can move on the field, and basketball background taught him how to keep the ball safe. With strong hands, every pass to him will be secured while this guy can also block very well as he is pretty big. On the other hand, he didn’t play football since middle school before being drafted, and the coaching staff isn’t all that impressed with how he is progressing meaning that he can go either way.
Austin was eight overall on draft, but he simply didn’t prove such a high position, and if you ask Rams fans they would immediately tell you that he is a bust. Even he can play on RB, WR and kick/punter returner he was far from impressive with 1,000+ yards only in 2015 and 2016. One of his biggest advantages is his speed, and with 4.34 result he is one of the fastest on the field. Additionally, he can turn on a dime and is quite elusive when handling the ball. For this guy to be a boom, he will need to post some career-best numbers and to be far better from what we have seen so far.
This is the name that is often mentioned by all Cowboys fans. Gregory was considered to be a top-10 talent, but his troubles with illegal substances prior and after the draft possibly ruined his career. God gave this guy incredible foundation to build a great career and if he could stay clean and train as hard as never before we are sure that he might have double-digit sack years in the future. It is clear that talent that Randy, or any other player, has is not enough to be successful, you need to train and perfect all those moves. Gregory has the potential to become pass rusher #1 in the league, but he can also fail and lose his job.
We have decided to add Irving to the list even he will miss first four games of the season due to suspension, and he is missing from training camp. All this suggest that the trouble with illegal substances that he has is far more serious than most people thought. Looking at the figures of this guy in the last 12 games you can come to the conclusion that he has .833 sacks per game meaning that in full season he would have 13, impressive. He is not only good in sacks, but he is also a disruptive force when on the field. If he could get back on track and keep out of trouble, we might see him rise as one of the best in the league. On the other hand, he can easily ruin his life and career.
We might not see Smith cut from the team, but there were insanely high expectations from him as he was at the high draft position even he came with a knee injury. There is a possibility for him to be set in a great position to succeed as Dallas might play the defensive scheme in which he will shine. His athletic capabilities are impressive, and with speed Jaylon has, we might see him dominate the field. Last year he was rushed to the field a little bit too soon, and he struggled in the beginning, but later on, Smith managed to improve and show his potential. What we saw from him during the last season isn’t enough for this guy to have a spot on the field meaning that he might be a bust.
