2020 Toyota MR2 – News and Rumors, Renderings, Pricing

The Toyota MR2 is a legendary sports car that was produced between 1984 and 2007, and during these 23 years, Toyota launched three individual generations which consisted of the W10, W20 and W30. Basically, the Toyota MR2 is a classic vehicle that reminds us of the compact Japanese Ferrari without a high price tag. Gazoo Racing head Tetsuya Tada told Evo at the 2017 Geneva Show that he wants “The Three Brothers” back in the lineup “as soon as possible.” Below, you can see several theories and renderings about the rumored MR2.

Exterior

The iconic Toyota MR2 had a wide and low stance with short overhangs and aggressive cues. It was a tiny vehicle with a 91.3-inch wheelbase, 155.5-inch length and 65.6-inch width, which means that we would expect a new model with similar proportions. In terms of design, the new MR2 would look a lot like the ongoing Lexus LFA and the next-generation Supra. The headlights would have a triangular shape while a trio of front intakes would add to the aggressive note.

The fourth-generation MR2 would sit on the lightweight alloy wheels with a split-spoke design similar to the one found on the LFA. These are the 18-inch wheels we are talking about, but 19’s would be offered as an option. At the rear, one could see louvered vents to keep the engine cool, with the deck spoiler integrated into the bodywork. The taillights would be flat and horizontal with LEDs, whereas a matte-black diffuser would match up with the front splitter and side skirts. As for the roof, a standard hardtop is possible, but a T-top and convertible configuration are optional as well.

Toyota MR2 Interior

The fourth-generation Toyota MR2 would have a driver-focused cabin with bolstered sports seats and black upholstery, which would be complemented by red contrast stitching and faux carbon fiber trim. The vehicle would be equipped with analog gauges and a large, centrally mounted tachometer with a speedometer and various temperature gauges on the sides.

The engineers would use metal for the pedals, while the steering wheel and shift knob would receive leather covers. The steering wheel would be small without the multifunction, thumb-mounted buttons because you would want to pay attention to the road because the MR2 is quick. However, don’t expect the MR2 to be drivable at the race track only. It would include the same infotainment system that is located in the GT86, and we would be gifted with Bluetooth streaming support, HD radio, smartphone support, and AUX and USB inputs. Some of the usual features such as air conditioning, adjustable seats, cruise control and power side-folding mirrors would be standard.

Engines

The fourth-generation Toyota MR2 is all about low weight and handling prowess, so the 3.0-liter V6 engine that powered the W20 is ruled out even though an engine such as this would be fantastic. The first unit that comes to mind is a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder which can be found under the hood of the ongoing Camry. The engine would deliver between 200 and 250 horsepower in the new model and about 175 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration would be satisfactory, with the MR2 reaching 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, whereas top speed would be limited to 150 mph. We assume the engine would be mated to a six-speed manual transmission, but that would not be the only option.

Toyota is showing off with its TNGA platform, but would this architecture be perfect for the new MR2? The new model should focus on shedding weight as much as possible, but even if it reached 2,500 pounds, it wouldn’t be a big deal. With this amount of weight, the MR2 would still be a joy on the track and winding roads.

2020 Toyota MR2 Price

The new 2024 Toyota MR2 would not be expensive, and it would slot between the GT86 and the next-gen Supra which are priced at $26,255 and $60,000 respectively. That is a large gap, but we expect the pricing to start at about $45,000 which is more than reasonable. The new MR2 would go against the Alfa Romeo 4C and Porsche Boxster.
