Ford is developing the next-generation Explorer, and prototype of what’s to be a 2019 Ford Explorer has been caught by the cameras for the first time. The all-new Explorer will hit the market in the second half of the next year as a 2019 model.
Back in 2011, the Explorer received a car-like unibody construction, and the I4 engine became the base one. These changes six years ago were the last ones for this popular SUV, and the new model is expected to be similar to the current vehicle, except the fact that it will be larger.
The 2019 Ford Explorer will go through evolutionary changes when it comes to the exterior styling, as the photos indicate. Although the SUV is camouflaged, the headlights look almost identical to the current model, you can clearly see the large boxy design, and there is space for three rows of seats.
However, Ford prepared significant overhaul under the skin as the 2019 Explorer will be one of the first vehicles based on the next-gen architecture designed for bigger models. The platform is code-named the D6, and it will still incorporate an FWD-based layout, while we are definitely going to see it underpinning both Ford’s and Lincoln’s creations. Of course, you will be able to opt for an AWD if you want.
Moreover, for the 2019 Ford Explorer, the engineers will use an enormous amount of aluminum, resulting in a lighter SUV with better fuel efficiency. Under the hood, the new car should come with a turbocharged I4 engine, which will be combined with a 9-speed automatic transmission that will replace the current 6-speed. If you want a performance version of a car, Ford offers a turbocharged V6 unit as an option, but we won’t be surprised if Blue Oval produced a hybrid variant as well.
