The Subaru WRX is simply a car that everyone must drive, and it got even better back in 2015 when its exterior changed, it received a longer A-Pillar, LED lighting and a more fashionable interior. Also, the engineers put in a new 2.0-liter I4 engine that added three extra horsepower and 14 additional lb-ft of torque. The new-generation has been here with us for only a couple of years, but despite that, the Japanese carmaker is remodeling its 2018 WRX. According to reports, the new model is going to receive some significant updates, but let’s see what the new version looks like now.

Subaru WRX Exterior Design

The 2018 Subaru WRX is going to remain mostly unchanged compared to its predecessor when it comes to the exterior. However, there are some minor modifications that are worth mentioning. Remember that weird insert on the bottom of the front grille? Well, luckily, it has been removed from the new model, and because of that, the 2018 version will have a bit larger grille with sharper points on each side. For more aggressive appearance, the corner trim inserts that house the daytime running lights are slightly redesigned, while the surrounds of the grille and air dam received a glossier black color. The LED Steering Responsive headlights are installed in the WRX Limited and STI models.

The sides and the rear segment of the 2018 Subaru WRX remain the same, but the roof will receive the updated rack mounting brackets. The front fenders will be muscular with rear-facing vents which go all the way to the side skirts. There is no flaring at the rear quarters, and if Subaru decided to add aggressiveness to the rear end, the WRX would be a serious machine. It still is.

2018 WRX Interior

Just like it is the case with the exterior, the cabin will be mostly identical to the one of the 2017 model. The smooth and slightly curved dashboard still decorates the interior with two displays, same trim panels, and a thin center console. Door grips are now smaller and better-looking, but more importantly, there are new updated materials and a new rear-seat armrest with cup holders.

The TFT display still sits between the two main gauges. Meanwhile, the entry-level WRX comes with an updated 5.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system plus the company’s STARLINK 7.0-inch multimedia system is located in the Premium trim, and this feature offers phone connectivity and navigation.

The flat-bottom steering wheel is carried over while the all-new WRX version will receive new heated exterior mirrors, but only the Limited trim comes with new seats that sport power lumbar adjustment. One of the most common complaints was the one regarding the noisy cabin, so there are some changes under the skin to tackle this issue. Moreover, Subaru put thicker door glass, improved door sealing and filled the windshield header with foam to prevent the frontal noise. These modifications are minor, but that should be enough to make the 2018 model quieter.

Drivetrain

Under the hood of the new Subaru WRX sits the 2.0-liter turbocharged Boxer engine good for 268 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque. The powerplant is combined with a six-speed manual gearbox, but the customers can opt for a Sport Lineartranoic CVT transmission with manual mode. Symmetrical AWD system and active torque vectoring are on the list of the standard equipment while this vehicle will go from 0 to 60 mph in between five and six seconds whereas top speed will be limited to 155 mph.

The suspension is modified, and because of it, the steering stability and ride comfort are improved, but the high-performance cornering capability of the WRX is not endangered. According to Japanese carmaker, the transmission shifter has a more precise feel to it due to the new internal synchro design. The electronic power steering system is updated as well, while the vehicle slimmed down slightly because the power steering motor is integrated with the controlling computer into one unit.

Subaru offers a new Performance Package for the WRX Premium, and if you decide to buy it, you will get Recaro eight-way power seats while the moonroof package will be stripped down in order to save weight. The brake calipers in red color with new JURID brake pads also come as a part of the package, so do double-spoke 18-inch wheels.

2018 Subaru WRX Price

The base 2018 Subaru WRX costs $26,995 which is only $300 more compared to the previous year. After that, there is the Premium trim which can be purchased with a six-speed manual and the CVT for $29,295 and $30,495 respectively. The range-topping WRX Limited carries the price tag of $31,595 for the manual version, whereas the addition of a CVT raises the price to $32,795.

Conclusion

Once it goes on sale, the 2018 Subaru WRX will compete against Ford Focus ST and Mitsubishi Lancer. The great news is that the new model brings much better infotainment system, upgraded suspension, and some other exterior tweaks. On the other hand, there is no power upgrade, which was expected and the rear end lacks aggressiveness.
