After years and years of rumors, Lamborghini is ready to introduce their first SUV called Urus. Finally, this vehicle was caught by spy camera in production form undergoing some tests, and although it was camouflaged, we can see some basic features of the new Lambo. The name appeared in 2008 before the display of the Estoque, whereas the Urus concept was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in 2012.

The Urus also named the Aurochs, is an ancient ancestor of the modern-day cow which went extinct in 1627. These were enormous, from 61 to 71 inches tall and they had 1,500 pounds, making them one of the largest bulls ever. What has that to do with the SUV? Well, the 2018 Lamborghini Urus will be the biggest vehicle produced by this manufacturer.

Exterior Design

It is really hard to talk about the design language of this car because it is the pioneer for Lamborghini and it wears all that camouflage. However, based on the spy shots, we can see that the shape and the size of the production version are similar to what we had with the concept and although it is covered, there are wide side skirts, a swoopy roofline, beefed-up rear wheel arches and a pointy and distinct nose.

Compared to the concept, the front fascia is completely remodeled, and there is a new LED pattern for the headlights and the different hood shape. The front bumper is bigger which means that the car is less sporty and more utilitarian. Moreover, there is a gap between the license plate and the nose, whereas the designers decided to replace those large side intakes with the smaller ones. Remember those carbon-fiber winglets on the concept? Well, those babies are gone, and the production version lost some of the aggressiveness, but they might resurface later in the process. Also, instead of tiny cameras, there are regular side mirrors while the SUV sits on multi-spoke wheels smaller than the concept’s 24-inch units. Generally speaking, the 2018 Lamborghini Urus is bulkier than expected.

2018 Lamborghini Urus Interior

Nothing is known about the interior, but hopefully, Lamborghini will manage to adjust it to be a typical SUV cabin and not a supercar one they got used to producing. This means a wide center console and a tall center stack and among others, a different seating position. Lamborghini plans to make the Urus’s cabin rock solid, and there will only be room for three passengers and a driver. Based on the concept they described it as “wearing a perfectly made-to-measure suit.”

When assembling a sports car, you need to take out every feature in the cabin that can add weight, but there is nothing to worry here, so Lamborghini installed every interior component, but they used carbon fiber reinforced with a polymer. This was the case with the concept, but the lightweight materials will definitely be used for the production car as well.

Behind the steering wheel, you can only find paddle shifters, whereas turn signals, wipers, and lights are controlled using the multi-function steering wheel and the screen behind it. This concept’s feature will not reach the production car because of all the laws and regulations related to turn signals and headlights. Not many of the concept’s equipment will be found in the production model, so we need to be patient to take a glimpse at what the cabin of the 2018 Lamborghini Urus is going to look like.

Lamborghini Urus Specs

For the Urus, the Italian carmaker is going to use a twin-turbocharged V8, and this was confirmed back in 2015 by the CEO Stephan Winkelmann and R&D boss Maurizio Reggiani. This powerplant was developed for Lamborghini specifically, and the similar unit used by Audi that pumps out 550 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque will not be used. The performance figures are unknown, but the Urus will definitely try to beat the Bentley Bentayga whose engine delivers 600 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful in the segment.

The powerplant will be paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. In addition, a new traction control will be developed, while interestingly enough, this will be the first V8 to power any Lamborghini since 1998. The last one with the V8 was the Jalpa. The top speed of the 2018 Lamborghini Urus will be limited to 180 mph, while the SUV should reach 60 mph in less than four seconds. Two more versions are expected after the original launch – a SuperVeloce and a plug-in hybrid.

Lamborghini Urus Price

There are some rumors about the starting price of the 2018 Lamborghini Urus which indicate that it will cost around $225,000. That is a lot of money for an SUV, and it is even more expensive than the rivalry Bentley Bentayga.
