2018 Acura RDX – Release Date, Design Changes, Engine Possibilities

The RDX crossover made its debut back in 2012, which means that this model is not old and it can still compete against its rivals. The RDX is based on the platform that also underpins the Honda CR-V, but driving the Acura is so much smoother. If you are looking for a powerful vehicle, this model is not for you, but what makes the RDX great is comfort and abundance of luxury features. The company is preparing the 2018 Acura RDX model which is going to come with Honda’s new modular platform that underpins the CR-V as well.

The new platform has been developed for some time now, and it is supposed to fit most of the company’s new vehicles. The RDX is going to be an FWD crossover SUV, and more space is expected because of the new chassis while noise, vibration, and harshness will be improved as well as safety. In addition, the 2018 version is going to shed a noticeable amount of weight. These are all just rumors, and Acura is keeping everything a secret for now. The RDX is being developed, and it has recently been spotted testing wearing a lot of camouflage but not enough to hide everything.

2018 Acura RDX Spy Shots

The prototype that has been spotted differs from the last test mule, which means that production body panels are used on this one. Generally speaking, the car is larger, it features a boxy design with the new corporate grille at the front end flanked by arched LED headlights. The fascia is hidden by the pink styrofoam, so there is a possibility that the sensors for active safety tech are packed here.

On the sides of the 2018 Acura RDX, you can see the hints of the block styling visible on the latest Honda CR-V while it is difficult to talk about the rear end because most of the area is heavily covered. What can be seen are the high-mounted taillights and partially integrated dual exhausts that contribute to the sporty look.

Engine Options

The 3.5-liter V6 engine powers the current model but this unit is probably not going to be enough for the 2018 Acura RDX. This powerplant is slightly old, and people expect high-performance units from premium crossover vehicles, so the company will have to change some things. The engine that is anticipated to be under the hood of the new model is the 2.0-liter turbo I4 that is similar to the one which is going to power the new Accord. Based on the Acura’s additions, a hybrid will definitely be introduced to the lineup after some time.

This 2.0-liter engine will be most likely combined with 2 or even 3 electric motors for the complete output of 350 horsepower. However, the problem here is that the price of the vehicle would go up. Rumor has it that a 3.0 or 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 petrol might even be used and this engine is expected to deliver over 350 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. This would be a good option and buyers would really have a choice, but let’s not forget that this is not official yet.

Release Date of 2018 Acura RDX

The premium midsize crossover segment is one of the most crowded markets, but it appears that Acura set its goals and wants to compete. In 2016, the RDX was the most popular model in Canada with 8,047 units sold. It was followed by the MDX with 5,425 deliveries and the TLX sedan with 4,137 vehicles.

Anyway, back to the release date. We don’t have any official information about the 2018 Acura RDX release date, but it is expected to arrive in the second half of 2017. This vehicle is popular in the US, so it is definitely going to take the podium at one of North American Auto Shows.
