The 2017 Toyota C-HR has arrived in Australia, and it will try to go against Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V which dominate on that continent. The new C-HR brings more aggressiveness, and it is based on the new platform, as it will finally be available for the Aussies. A total of 6,000 examples will be supplied to Australia which is about one-third compared to the CX-3.

Thus, the C-HR will not be offered in the base trim that costs $20,000, but 2WD and AWD will be available together with a manual and automatic transmission. The starting price of the new model will be $26,990, but you need to add on-road costs to this figure. If you want a CVT, you will have to pay additional $2,000, which is the same price for the CVT-only AWD system. The Koba AWD CVT will cost $35,290, and it will probably account for roughly 50% of the C-HR sales.

According to Toyota, 83% of the small crossovers that were bought in 2016 were level-two trim or above, which is the reason why the Japanese-based company will focus on upper trims. In order to attract younger buyers, Toyota offers eight color options and a contrasting roof for $450. What is definitely on the plus side is a five-year period of capped-price servicing with new 12-month/15,000 km intervals at only $195.

Toyota CHR Engine

The 2017 Toyota C-HR is equipped with a new 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine that produces 85 kW and 185 Nm of torque. The unit comes with direct injection, enhanced heat management and an exhaust manifold in the cylinder head. In addition, it includes a water-cooled turbo and intercooler allowing this small crossover to return 6.3-liters per 100 kilometers.

We have already mentioned new underpinnings, and that this one is based on the new TNGA platform which was first used on the Prius model. Considering that this is the first time this architecture is utilized for the crossover, it is no wonder that the launch has been postponed. MacPherson strut front suspension is used at the front end, while there is a double-wishbone setup at the rear.

You may be surprised to hear that the new C-HR is bigger than some models such as the Suzuki Vitara and the Toyota Corolla, which positions it next to the Nissan Qashqai in terms of size. The length of the new vehicle is 4,360 mm, while the width and the height are 1,795 and 1,565 mm respectively. It offers 377 liters of cargo space, and it may not be the HR-V, but it is still practical.
