The 2017 Toyota 86 has included numerous modes and as the Japanese automaker says the new vehicle is “more driver-focused than ever.” Some of the changes include new shocks and coil springs. In addition, a rear stabilizer bar has been included as a part of a suspension upgrade.

In order to add rigidity, there are more spot welds at the rear. The chassis on the new Toyota 86 is stiffer than on the previous model, whereas the traction control is also enhanced. In general, the aerodynamics of the vehicle are improved.

One of the offered modes are “Track,” and with this setup, the amount of traction control can be selected and optimized. The drivers could choose “fully off” track mode. One of the standard features in the 2017 Toyota 86 is the Hill Start Assist.

The styling changes are minor, and the new vehicle looks more aggressive on the sides, whereas the front end has also received some updates. 17-inch alloy wheels are added to the range-topping GTS model.

2017 Toyota GT86 Engine

Under the hood, we have a 2.0-liter “boxer” I4 petrol engine, and the customers can choose between a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. If you opt for the automatic, the engine mated to it will produce 147 kW and 205 Nm of torque. There is a slight power boost if you pick a manual gearbox – the unit combined with it delivers 5 kW and 7 Nm more compared to the one that is offered with automatic.

Although the manual version provides extra power, the fuel figure jumps from 7.8 l/100 km for the previous model to 8.4 liters for the new one. The fuel consumption for the automatic has remained the same at 7.1 l/100 km. This is a significant difference which you need to take into account, but have in mind that the real world results will vary.

The interior is equipped with the small steering wheel, and a G-force meter is available in the GTS trim. Moreover, the 2017 Toyota 86 features a 4.2-inch color multi-info display and stopwatch for those hard-core track drivers.

Toyota Australia’s Tony Cramb said: “These updates for the Toyota 86 are focused on improving the responsiveness, balance and handling of a car that is already rated in the same league as some legendary sports cars. It demonstrates the passion within Toyota for designing and engineering cars that look great and provide engaging driving dynamics – a passion that is attracting new, younger customers to the Toyota brand.”
